Mailbox delegation is like having access to another user mailbox. In this guide, we will see what type of access one can get through delegation and ways to provide access to someone. This article applies to Microsoft 365 administrators as users cannot provide delegation access, admin access is required to perform this task.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is mailbox delegation and its type?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Mailbox delegation is known as a process to provide delegation access of one user mailbox to another user or providing shared mailbox access to the users. \u00a0Suppose you are working as a personal assistant in an office and your manager wants you to check his emails, so for this you will need delegation access of your manager\u2019s mailbox.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Types of Delegation Permissions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are three types of mailbox delegation permissions that you can provide to someone else.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Full Access (Read and manage)<\/strong> \u2013 Full access delegation permission refers to read and manage the mailbox. Users can read all emails, delete and manage all mailbox things like creating tasks and calendars. Sending will be not allowed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Send As<\/strong> \u2013 This allows you to send emails from another mailbox whose <strong>Send As<\/strong> delegation permission is provided to you. The email will look as sent by the owner of the mailbox.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Send On Behalf<\/strong> \u2013 It allows you to send emails on the behalf of another mailbox. In the sent email, it will be written as that \u201c<strong>&lt;delegated email&gt; sent on the behalf of &lt;mailbox&gt;<\/strong>\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Setting Up Mailbox Delegation Permissions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To set up mailbox delegation permissions, we can either use Microsoft 365 Exchange Administration or Windows PowerShell. Admin Center method can be used if you have a low number of users but in case of large number of users, it is advisable to use PowerShell to save time. PowerShell can perform Microsoft 365 tasks easily using scripts for bulk users. Let\u2019s discuss both the methods one by one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: If the user is hidden from the Global address list, then delegate permissions will not work for that user.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Using Admin Center for Delegation Permissions:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/admin.exchange.microsoft.com\/\">Microsoft 365 Exchange Admin Center<\/a> and login with your admin credentials.<\/li>\n<li>Now click on the <strong>recipients<\/strong> then <strong>mailbox<\/strong> in the left sidebar. Once done you are good to go with the steps below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Run Windows PowerShell as Administrator and Connect to Exchange Online using the command mentioned below and log in with your admin credentials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">connect-exchangeonline<\/pre>\n<p>Once connected to Exchange Online PowerShell, you can follow the below mentioned commands according to your needs.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Delegation For Single Mailbox:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You can use the command below according to the permissions required for a single mailbox.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Full Access Permission:<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">Add-MailboxPermission \u2013identity user@domain.com -User delegate@domain.com -AccessRights FullAccess<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Send As Delegation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">Add-RecipientPermission -Identity user@domain.com -Trustee delegate@domain.com -AccessRights SendAs<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Send On Behalf Permissions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">Set-Mailbox -Identity user@domain.com -GrantSendOnBehalfTo delegate@domain.com<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> {change <a href=\"mailto:user@domain.com\">user@domain.com<\/a> with your user mailbox address and <a href=\"mailto:delegate@domain.com\">delegate@domain.com<\/a> with delegate person mailbox address}<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Delegation for Bulk User Mailboxes:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you want to set up delegation permissions for multiple mailboxes to multiple users, then you can use the below mentioned command.
